Isle of Man Road Podium 2011

After a high speed crash at this year’s TT motorcycle road racer Mark Herbertson from Hexham made a successful return to the famous 37.73 mile mountain TT course with a third place podium finish in the 500cc Classic Manx Grand Prix.

Mark finished third behind Ryan Farquar and Chris Palmer after a last lap push over the mountain section to beat Steve Linsdell by nine seconds to claim the final step on the podium.

Mark completed the 151 mile (4 lap) race in a time of 1 hour: 28 mins.36.35 sec, with an average speed of 102.196 mph. His fastest lap was on lap three which was 103.14 mph.

Mark was riding a 1969 G50 Matchless which is a single cylinder 500cc motorcycle with a power output of around 54 BHP.

The motorcycle is owned and maintained by Mr Alan Hermiston from Brinsworth, South Yorkshire who was at the Manx Grand Prix with Mark to see the success of his motorcycle.

Mark said “It was a great race and I made up my mind from the off to just go as fast as I could and try and keep my lap speeds as high as possible. I was getting good pit board information from Geoff and Scott Young from Rothbury at the Gooseneck and on the last lap when I saw my board saying 4th place and minus 5 seconds I just got my head down and rode over the mountain to the finish line. When I arrived over the finish line and was directed into the top three winner’s enclosure I was over the moon. I have been racing at the Isle of Man for many years now and this is the first time I have been on the podium and I was absolutely ecstatic when I found out that I had done over 103 mph on a single lap which is the fastest time I have ever done on the G50 Matchless.”

Mark had many people to thank post the race and after the podium ceremony and radio interviews he had chance to thank Alan his wife and family for all there support and pit crew activities over the years. Mark is always on the lookout for sponsorship and support for his motorcycle road racing exploits and asked if anyone is interested in helping in any way, to get in touch by contacting him at mark.herbertson@btinternet.com.
